As children, we believe that the world is our oyster and that we can be whatever we wish to be. We embark on a journey to chase after our dreams and passions, only to grow older and realize that those dreams, as picturesque as they might seem, are better left unfulfilled. We are told what “success” looks like in this world, what is realistic, what is secure, what is attainable. As Asian and Asian American womxn, these words are often echoed even more loudly to us, internalized as truths we feel pressured to realize. Perhaps you are standing at a crossroads in your life right now, deciding what to pursue, which path to explore, or whether to forgo something you’ve been doing your whole life. Perhaps you are filled with uncertainty and paralyzed with indecision. No matter if you are a student or seasoned professional, moments like these seem to ring true to us all.
We wish for the 2021 AAWIL Conference to return to our youth and to draw on the important lesson that we tend to forget: that the world is indeed our oyster. As much as the world seems fast-paced and daunting, it is just as much filled with infinite possibilities, opportunities, and connections. Taking on this lens, we wish to inspire AAWIL attendees by reminding them of their autonomy in navigating their own journeys, and that they have the freedom to chase after whatever they wish in this open world. We ultimately hope that in carrying the theme, “Your World, Your Oyster,” the 2021 AAWIL Conference will inspire attendees to approach life with the same enthusiasm and hope we all had as children, and to know that the power to shape your own journey lies within yourself.
